Getting Started
What you need to know!
This is a short guide for those new to free form role playing, which this board and its
associates engage in. In Rople Playing Games or RPG's as they're referred to, anyone can take on the characteristics
or persona of anything they want or they can imagine.
People of any age can enjoy role playing. Many of the "scenearios" , however can deal with
situations that could be considered basically adult in orientation, With some violence, foul language, or sexual content.
We on this site strive to keep these scenes at most PG 13 rated as to allow posters of all ages to enjoy these boards and
not have worried parents. FFRP is a wonderful creative outlet, encouraging use of imagination while strengthening writing
skills. Players can immerse themselves in a story of their own creation. Painting the scene in their own minds, playing out
scenarios as if they were their character. The stories and occurences in play can, be at times, confusing to a newcomer.
And thus we have constructed a help section, in which you are now.
What is Free Form Role Play?
This is role playing done on the fly or at times organized or encouraged by an Administrator
on our site. In our RP community it is usually done in chat rooms on the Internet or in Forums that are
play by post . It can as well be accomplishe via other means such as email or instant messengers. It
is the creation of story by a player or several, by means of responding to, a developed scene, or other characters written
actions and emotions with those of the character you assume. We strive for high quality writing and respectable fair
play from players. Free form role play, has no set scenario and no Game Master, it is a cooperative effort by
the players. Everyone contributes to the story line in a sort of interactive writing forum, simply responding to other characters
and situations as they arise.
What you need !
A web browser. We suggest IE. Our site
was designed with it in mind and some custom html scripts may run differently or not at all using other browsers. However
other browsers will work because the functionality of the site is cross browser scripted. We also suggest viewing
of the site to be done at 800x 600 pixel screen resolution. It simply looks best that way.
An EZboard account for each character you decide to
portray is also required. You may registar for a free account at Ezboard and they will aide you in setting up an account for use. This is free and does not cost a dime.
Imagination and a sense of fair play. A few manners
wouldn't be a bad idea either, even for the bad guys. Imagination is a very big asset in this type of gaming although it is
not critical. Fair play is important because there are no dice or GM to influence the flow and damage of interaction.
And the fastest way to loose face is to not play fair and take your share of damage. A descriptive vocabulary is also a big
plus. This helps others understand you and interacts better. If you can describe how you're moving, where you're moving
to, who you're looking at, and what you're doing, others will know better how to interact with you.
Creating A Character!
Character creation can be as simple or elaborate as
you want. You make it up essentially. You pick a race, a name and invent a basic history for your character. You can choose
races and even characters from books, movies and other such entertainment's, but please be aware of copyright laws and the
fact that others may know more about your character than you do. It is not a good idea to pick a well known character to use.
We would ask however that once you have created your Character that you post a bio in the House of Stories Forum and perhaps even the link to that post in your charcters profile/signature once your ezboard account is active. Things
to consider when developing a new character are:
~NAME~
Now you can choose a name for your character.
Try to make your name unusual as most people use this name as their handle when registering with EZboard. If the name
is already taken you can try to modify the spelling or add numbers to it. Choose a race appropriate name unless you are prepared
with a short story about how your name is so unusual for your race. It can be a single name or a full name including middle,
family or geographical association, even clans or titles are accepted.

~GENDER~
Most people tend to default to their own real life gender, be it male or female or even neither. Many role players
of both genders have played opposite character genders, and quite successfully. Many roleplayers can succesfully
portray a chacrter that is neither gender, an IT , many times creatures and animals are roleplayed. This can be very fun and
provides a unique oppurtunity to be extremely creative. It is not uncommon to occasionally be mistaken for the
opposite gender when in a chat with a neutral character. Do not always assume that the character you are interacting with
is the same gender as the person playing that role.
|
~RACE~
Elf, Dwarf, Human, Dragon, Griffin, Drow, etc. This is many times the first consideration
because of all the rest of the character's traits and characteristics are effected by what race the character is. An Elf would
not be short and stocky like a Dwarf and a Orc in no way resembles a Fairy. If you choose to be a Dragon or other such
creature, keep in mind your size when you say you're throwing on a coat and running outside. Keep in race when you move around,
consider speech patterns, shape and size. After you've decided whether to be human or not, you'll need to decide which gender
to be. Many people enjoy playing animals and they do it rather well too.
|
~ALIGNMENT~
By now you should decide or have decided if
your character has a good or bad disposition. All manner of alignments are necessary for interest and variety in the games.
A balance of both essential for variety and interest. Often this is decided by the deity or religion a character
serves or practices. Consider this when decided if your character is either good, evil or neutral.
|
~AGE ~
Now that you have gotten this far, you should
determine how old you character is. Also, strange as it may seem, you should determine how old your character appears to be
to others. The all time favorite has to be that one is thousands of years old and looks only twenty. Wonderfully enough there
are those few, creative individuals out there who play varying ages well.
|
|
~APPEARANCE ~
Build, limitations, special conditions
and handicaps, this includes clothing, jewlery and weapons as well and usually depends
on your profession. By now an inner picture of this character should have formed and you should have some
idea of what this character will look like. Is the character tall, short, thin, stocky, dark, fair, athletic, wispy?
Draw or write what this character looks like. It would be a good idea to determine what special physical characteristics or
afflictions it will have. Depending on the character that is taking shape will determine how simple or elaborate
this is. Here many players include a personal Signature or picture very specific for each charcter, it helps ease
the strain of having to explain your appearance over and over. Consider
race appropriate clothing and weapons, the settings climate and the history of your character here. We roleplay in a fantasy
time frame of the medevil ages, an Elven society amoung mortal lands of men.
|
~PROFESSION ~
If you are leaning in the direction
of Soldier, Mercenary, Paladin, Assassin, Priest/ess, or associated professions you can go on to develop a history now. What does your character do to make a living? There
are even people who play the bartenders and wait staff in some of these scenes. Be it Butcher, Baker, Beggar man, Thief...
this determines further how your character will interact with others. Serving a deity or a cause is also a profession.
Sometimes a character will be a slave or subservient to another character, don't assume the player is like that either. Remember
if someone is playing a role like this, that it is by mutual agreement between the players, whether or not it is by agreement
between the characters themselves.
|
~DEFENSES/IMMUNITIES~
When developing a character it is just as important to decided what defenses or immunties it
has, as it is its offensive abilities. Again your profession, race, and alignment usually play a very decisive factor in the
development of defenses. Does your character serve a divine deity and therefor have a natural defense to curses and dark magics
as bestowed by his deity. Is your character an elmental creature of the wind, and thusly winds and magical attacks od winds
have no effct on it. These are just as important as your skells and feats, maybe even more so.
|
~SKILLS/MAGIC ~
Great amounts of consideration should
be placed on what skills your character possesses. Is it a magic user, a fighter, a thief, a scout, an armourer
or blacksmith even. Seems everyone wants to be omnipotent, more powerful than God and know every spell necessary to keep anything
from happening to them. These sorts of characters should be avoided during creation. Be fantastically realistic with your characters! Factors to be considered
when deciding this are race, alignment, profession and even age and gender. Keep in mind that your character will also acquire
skills and capabilities asit grows.
